A very big welcome to ‘George the Barbarian,’ our own tribute to that rare breed of person – a Neath resident with an Aberavon fan club. The last man to be awarded this accolade, was the late, great John Bevan and that was only after his selection for the British Lions. Exalted company indeed, with inclusion based not only on George’s 12 year, 370 Games, 126 tries career but also on the fact that, on 14th November 2006 at Newbury against the Combined Services, he became only the 16th Aberavon player to be invited into the exclusive Barbarians club and in doing so, brought honour to us all.
This booklet celebrates this fact and acknowledges a sporting career spent in the service of Aberavon RFC. Generously but totally in keeping with the code of ethics and morals that make the Wizards stand out from every other club, a testimonial year has been awarded, to recognise George’s contribution to Aberavon. In buying this booklet or supporting one of the many functions held throughout this season, you will be contributing towards George’s testimonial fund.
A sporting career is both short and precarious and those God given gifts of athleticism and in this case prodigious strength, are bestowed only fleetingly. Soon the records will be all that remain of a life of sporting prowess, loyalty and endeavour. It is this loyalty that we seek to reward and your generosity in supporting this Testimonial Fund will be most gratefully appreciated. With enough money in the pot, we can help George abandon his bull nose shovel and his Tonka truck and go into business as a Pork scratching salesman in the Golan Heights. Well……………….. it beats living in Neath.
